The Oeil Doux chasm between Fleury and Saint-Pierre-la-Mer is one of the natural sites not to be missed on a camping holiday in the Aude . Near Narbonne, explore the Massif de la Clape, a vast natural area where hiking is king. The Oeil Doux chasm is a must-see on any flowery walk or mountain bike ride. An exceptional spot that attracts many nature lovers. We tell you all you need to know about this superb natural site!

What is the Oeil Doux chasm?

L’Oeil Doux is what’s known as a cenote, a water-filled abyss. This circular lake is reputed to be very deep (around 14 meters), and swimming is prohibited. Above this emerald expanse of water, it’s impossible to ignore the impressive 40-metre-high limestone cliffs. While there are many legends surrounding the lake, certain particularities seem to be true, such as the fact that it communicates with the sea via a small fault. This would explain the lake’s brackish water!

How to get to the Oeil Doux chasm?

There are two options: you can park your car or camper van in the Domaine de l’Oustalet parking lot and follow the path to the sheepfold, or opt for the Gouffre parking lot on the Route Départementale 118. The ballad can then begin… all to the rhythm of the cicadas! A change of scenery guaranteed.

Walk on the Oeil Doux site #breathtaking nature

Above or below the cliffs, the Oeil Doux chasm will give you a magical moment in the heart of nature during your camping vacation near Narbonne . This short hike in the heart of the La Clape massif takes you through pine forests and typical Mediterranean vegetation, with the garrigue in the background, of course, but also orchids, rosemary, thyme and lavender. The walk isn’t necessarily strenuous, but the path is a little steep at certain points, so take care and don’t take any unnecessary risks for a simple vacation photo! Admittedly, the view is magnificent as you gain altitude, and you’ll have the opportunity to admire the Golfe du Lion and the nearby sea, which blends beautifully with the blue summer sky. A beautiful spectacle offered by a wild nature that will invite you to let go and escape during your stay in the Aude.
