The advantages of discovering the Canal du Midi by boat

Departing from the towns of Homps or Agens-Minervois (both just ten minutes from Lézignan-Corbières), you’ll enjoy a river cruise through the remarkable, soothing scenery of the Canal du Midi. You’ll have a front-row seat to admire exceptional structures such as the Malpas tunnel and the 9 locks at Fonseranes. It’s easy to let yourself drift off into daydreams as you listen to an enthusiastic guide recount the exploits of the construction of this canal linking the Atlantic to the Mediterranean.

You can also rent and pilot a boat for the duration of a trip. They’re so easy to use, you don’t even need a license, and their very moderate speed means you can enjoy a leisurely stroll. This excursion invites you to recharge your batteries in the heart of unspoilt wilderness. During your cruise, you’re likely to come across a few fishermen and cyclists along the Canal. In fact, why not cross to the other side of the river to enjoy the Canal du Midi in a different way?

Cycling is a great way to explore the Canal du Midi, while enjoying a pleasant, shady route through forests of pine, oak and plane trees. Some cyclists even choose to ride the entire canal from Toulouse to Sète over several days, stopping at the end of the day to recuperate and spend a comforting night. Our campsite between Carcassonne and Narbonne is ideally located for a well-deserved stopover or a day on the canal. The scenery is varied and the trails are suitable for all generations! You’ll feel a sense of freedom, and even driving slowly you’ll have no trouble overtaking the canal barges. On land, you’ll enjoy watching a boat pass through one of the Canal du Midi’s famous locks.

A mountain bike tour along the Canal du Midi also offers the advantage of stopping off in nearby villages to sample local specialities, stock up on provisions or indulge in a cultural visit. The treasures of the Aude are always a good excuse to take a little break between pedal strokes!

In the final analysis, whether by boat or by bike, the Canal du Midi is a unique experience, and it would be a pity to choose between the two means of transport, as they will provide you with superb complementary adventures and plenty of good memories.
